Kochandy Vareeth was born in 1829 AD. He got enough education  for getting appointment in government service. He stayed with his father in the house which was there earlier in the land occupied by government hospital now and helped his father in his business and agriculture. The main business at the chowka was looked after by him. He married from Naduvileparambil in Kuttanad family, now renamed as ‘Ettupara’. But she died after giving birth to three sons.

Later Kochandy Vareeth re-married  from ‘Ambarampara’ family in  Bharanganam. He had three sons and a daughter in his second marriage.

Kochandy Vareeth became the head of the family (‘Karanavar’) at the age of thirty due to his father’s untimely death. His youngest brother was in his early ages and the other brother Thomma was a seminarian.

During the course of time he divided family property among his brothers. His second brother  Pothen was given the Tharavad. Chandy was given the property in ‘Umbuzhichira’ Kochandy Vareeth built his house on the north of Peermade Road (road from Kavala to Market) and settled there. ‘Vadakkeveedu’ was the name given to the new house.

He purchased land and paddy fields for the family. Agriculture was very profitable in those days. Because of Adiyan system prevailing then,  workmen were available in plenty. They worked as slaves on very low wage.

During the time he was in possession of 50Acres of paddy field, and other properties. Each land was known as ‘Mury’ and he had 28 mury land.

During 1859 AD Kochandy Vareeth became ‘Muthalupidikkaran’ (Treasurer) of Changanacherry under the Travancore government. He was the successor of Kuruvilla Kochandy who  held this post earlier. Kuruvilla Kochandy was holding the post of Treasurer till his death. Kochuandy Vareeth retired at the age of 53.

He was involved spiritual activities of Changanacherry church as well. There was a case against the church connected with keeping of wax in the church for making candles. This happened during 1850 AD. The policestation  writer who went to church to purchase a ‘veruku’ from the Vicar saw wax being dried on the bamboo mat. During those days wax was the monopoly material of the Travancore government.

The matter was brought to the notice of Taluk officer Kochandy Vareeth tried to settle the matter peacefully. But on hearing the news, few neighbouring Christians came to the spot and quarreled with the officials. It is told that the officials were beaten by the Christians.

The then Tehasildar reported the matter to the higher authority. The accused alongwith Kuruvilla Kochandy , Kochandy Vareeth were arrested and kept in jail which was called ‘Dhanavu’. Few among the Christians - Thakadiyel Mathu, Kanakkan of the church and the Kapyar were beaten by the police while in custody.

Later they were released from the jail on bail and they had to appear before court at Alappuzha. The court ordered to remit Rs. 50/- each for the release of the accused. This issue became a strain on the financial position of the church. So the silver cross of the church has to be pawned at Thumpoly church and golden crown of St. Sebastian at Monkompil Kottaram.    

The financial stability of the church  worsened  further  and there was chaos in the administration. The only benefit of this unwanted police case was that Kochandy Vareeth  was able to build  friendship with Divan of Travancore.

At this juncture Fr. Chavara Kuriakose was informed of the condition of Changanacherry church by some laymen of  the church. Fr. Chavara Kuriakose came to the church for enquiry. He  appointed two Trustees to clear debits and find income for the church. One among the Trustees was Kochandy Vareeth.

The Trustees audited the account and found 5000 ‘Chakram’ as balance. One Travancore Rupee was 28 chakrams. This amount was kept in the custody of the then vicar Kadavil Kunjukutty Kathanar. The Vicar influenced one of the trustees and spent the available fund at his discretion.  

Thoppilachen a pious priest of the time was then appointed as vicar. Kochandy Vareeth got back the pawned materials from Thumpoly church and Monkompu Kottaram. He introduced a proper system of accounting of the church to be strictly followed both by the Kanakkan and the Trustee.

Many reforms made by Kochandy Vareeth in the church were criticized by a section of people because of the politics prevailing in Catholic Church then. There were two groups, one favouring Varapuzha and other favouring Kodungallur . There were physical attacks between the two groups and  disputes of  Varapuzha group  entering the Kochupally . The trustees and priests also were in these two  groups. There were many incidents which  happened in the church during Kochandy Vareeth’s life time and this made the ‘Catholic Sabha’s foundation itself  shaking. For getting  detailed information, one may read pages 38 to 42 of Olassaa Kudumba Charithram. As an ardent believer of Marthoma Christians, Kochandy Vareeth made a travel in a boat (Kettuvallom) to Malayattoor.

Bishop  Charles Laveeng had a special affection for Kochandy Vareeth. The Bishop learned to write in Malayalam and even sent a letter in Malayalam to Kochandy Vareeth when he was hospitalized. Later Fr. Cyriac Kandankerry became the Vicar General and  Administrator. He and Kochandy Vareeth became very close and they together had a good hold over the administration of the church.

Kochandy Vareeth earned appreciation even from the Catholics outside Changanacherry.  He found time to continue the eye treatment which his ancestors began and it was done as a  free service. His Will is given in page 44 of Olassaa Kudumba Charithram

Kochandy Vareeth died in October 1905.
