While Scaria was a young boy, he followed the foot steps of his uncle  Thoma Kathanar and desired to join priesthood.. His father therefore summoned a ‘guru’to his house  to impart required ducation for this purpose. He joined Mannanam Petti Seminary in 1867. He was ordained in 1879. This was a very jubiliant  occasion for all in the family and  the ordained priest got 19 golden rings as present from relatives. This was a custom prevailing during that period.

Scaria Kathanar served in Ernakulam throuhhout his priesthood career. He served for a long period in Chakkiathu church. In 1911, while he was climbing down the stair case, he developed giddiness and fell down and died. His dead body was brought to Changanacherry in  two rowing boats joined together  and was buried in the church.

Scaria Kathanar was a pious, loving and broad minded person and he was very much interested in arts.. He used to maintain in a note book, account of all his income, expenses, amount spent as charity, amount sent home etc. The front of this note book had the picture of a Queen and printed as Made in Austria . Probably this was brought by a European who visited  Varapuzha.  He also maintained an account of all amount he gave for his father’s brother  Kochandy Pothen’s son Fr OP Thomas for his seminary studies.. He even kept ready in a trunk the required dress for ordination of Fr OP Thomas . This was a clear sign of his affection and appreciation of an young priest joining priesthood from Olassa family. He also cleared the mass dues of his uncle Thoma Kathanar.

He had a good collection of classic furniture of which one round table was gifted to Changanacherry bishop’s house.  He executed a Deed in Malayalam year 1091, and hie ‘Pathrameny” and cash and other belongings were divided among his relatives. He gave Rs 500 to Changanacherry church for offering mass for the dead souls..
