He was born as the second son of Michael Pothen in the year 1889.He passed matriculation from S B High School, Changanacherry.He was a model student of S B High School. His ambition was to become a Jesuit Priest after graduation and was fond of European dress code.He attended the class in full suit and was interested in stage acting. He graduated from St Aloysius College, Mangalore. He started his career as a teacher at St Joseph Convent Girls High School, Changanacherry were Changanacherry for about three years. He disclosed his desire to Rev Fr Gregory Kandankary, Vicar General/school manager to become a priest. Rev Fr Gregory Kandankary overjoyed to hear his wish and assured all his help to become a priest.

In those days Changanacherry were handled by prominent families of Christians, Muslims and Nairs.Mannathu Padmanabhan, Bharat Kesari was one of the renowned public people at Changanacherry. On establishing of Edward Memorial town hall at Changanacherry, it became a community hall.There was no restriction for cast and creed to assemble in this community hall. Citizen of Changanacherry celebrated the ceremonial birthday of Travancore Maharaja in the year 1914 at Edward memorial hall.

As per the advice of O P Chandy sir, he joined Candy Seminary for the priesthood.He was ordained as a priest on 07 Dec 1922.He served as a priest only in Changanacherry Archdiocese.  He served as a vicar at Thathamppally, Kurumpandom, Kavalam, Puliumkunnu, Alapuzha, Edathuva, Champakulam etc. While he was Vicar at St Antony’s Church, baptizeKurumpanadom, he was gifted with God’s baptise the present Archbishop emeritus Joseph Powathil. Later he was appointed by Bishop Kavukat as vicar of Kottayam Lourde church. He was in charge of conducting a monthly chitty of Changanacherry diocese.He served as a vicar at Lourde church for ten consecutive years.He had converted Lourde church property to a rubber estate with Govt subsidy.He was appointed as pro manager of SB College by Bishop Kalassery. After retirement from priethood, he moved to priest house located at  Parel church.Golden jubilee of priesthood was conducted on a large scale.Archbishop Antony Padiyara presided over the jubilee function in the presence of Bishop Joseph Powathil, the then  Bishop of Kanjirappalyy diocese.Mangalapatram signed by Holy Pope was read out by Archbishop Antony Padiyara at this function.His health deteriorated day by day and eventually, he was taken to Elysium by Almighty God on 30 March 1980. He was buried at St Mary’s Metropolitan Church at Changanacherry.
