He was the youngest brother of Kochandy Varghese born in the year 1837.There is no record of his education and the name of seminary where he had his priesthood education .As a deacon he was an inmate at Changanganacherry Metropoilitan Church .He served in this church as Asst.Vicar ,later as Pro Vicar. Thomma Kathanar was handsome and very energetic person  like his elder brother.As a priest he maintained standard of decency and decorum throughout his life.In his tenure as a pro vicar at  metropolitan church,  an epidemic disease like small pox ravaged Changanacherry. In those days people were very much afraid of this epidemic and believed that this disease was spread by devil. In those days there was no proper treatment administered to the affected ones. Christians believed that St Sebastian by his saintly power  could cure this disease.  St Sebastian’s sculpture was  taken in a procession by Thoma Kathanar to the affected areas  .He shouldered this and heard confession of affected persons .One day he went to hear the confession of a person affected by this disease and on seeing Thoma Kathanar , he shouted in a loud voice and Thoma Kathanar got frightened and he returned to his room .The next day he too was affected this disease and he died after 3 days in the year 1876 . His body was  buried at Changanacherry metropolitan church cemetery.
