Son of Chandy Geevarghese and Mariyamma During School days in Govt .Malayalam school,he was named Kunjachen. This nick name changed to Chandy while he was in English school .When he joined Pondicherry seminary his name became Alexander. He received God's call when he was only 13years old .He then stayed with Fr Koshy at St.Berchman’s Boarding School to qualify for seminary studies. After two years in Kottayam seminary he joined Puthenpally seminary and after three years of study there, he felt an urge to serve in mission areas and so shifted his studies to Pondicherry seminary . He was ordained on 14th December 1936 and served there for 23 years .He worked among poor Tamil Christians who were a suppressed lot leading a slavery life. Financially they were very much backward and they didn't have any schools to study and come up in life Fr Alexander was determined to improve the living conditions of these people. He taught them to make little savings, cut down huge expenses like marriage expenses and to be self- reliant. He made arrangements for them to do farming in their own land. With the limited income from church, he bought farming tools for them and started primary schools. He served as Vicar in Kalltaruchy, Meyanoor, Pondicherry, Neyveli churches. He developed diabetes and this illness forced him to return from Pondicherry in 1959 and Mar Kavukatt gave him charge of Ithithanam Parish. He worked there for 12 years and during this period, he devised many schemes for the upliftment of the poor parishioners. On 3rd April 1971, on the eve of Hosana Friday, he developed chest pain and left this world for eternal life. The funeral was attended by Mar Padiyara. Parishioners erected his oil paintings in Church Room entrance. Olassayil Kudumbam raised a fund of Rs. 7500 as Endovement in his memory, the interest of which is given to Archbishop for deserving seminary students or for mission work. | |
