Chandy, the middle one of  the three sons of Kochandy Pothen ,was born after Ousephachen. Like his brother, Chandy too dominated in all fields in the society. The only difference between these two brothers  was that while Ousphachen mingled with the less literate people, Chandy  worked with  literate  people  in the field of  education.

While he was an young boy, Chandy  was very studious and showed an  active interest in arts and sports. After Malayalam education, he passed Matriculation from SB High School and he was the first one from Olassa family to pass Matriculation.

On completion of studies, he secured a job as a teacher in SB High School during a period when there were hardly any Christian in teaching profession. .His  favorite subjects were  English and Mathematics.

He was soon acknowledged as  a dedicated teacher with modern thinking who promoted arts and sports in school . He constituted  prizes to the victorious students in these fields. . This enabled him to encourage those who are bright in studies and develop artistic and sports  talents for those who are bit backward in studies. He set up  a dramatic club in school and practiced students in  acting. Being a good  actor, he too participated in dramas . He used to stage Shakespeare dramas which not only  exploited  the  acting talents of students, but also made them master  English language.. He got the support of Bishop Laveeng and and Bishop’s  Secretary Richards in all his endeavors.  He was  thus able to inculcate in  children a modern outlook quite different from the usual  environment . He used to come to school dressed  in pants, coat and tie. He insisted that the students should wear clean clothes and dress nicely. He even changed  the uniform of the students to mundu, coat and hat although many commented that he is following European style.

While he was in teaching profession,he became an active member of Catholic Congress. He organized a meeting of Catholic Congress in the school which was attended by many eminent catholic leaders of the time.   He soon realized that teaching profession would  be a bottleneck  to bring out the best talents in him and so resigned from that job. He then studied law and started practicing in Thiruvalla and later in Changanacherry. But he didn’t continue long in this profession  also.

While he was a teacher, he married Mariyamma of Thakadiel family and he had 4 sons and 4 daughters in this marriage.

As a learned person, he earned reputation and  a prominent place in  society . He used to stand on his own decisions and implemented these. There were two incidents related to Chandy which made him famous. During his time a Diwan who ruled Travancore undertook a journey to the government offices in the north for inspection  and Changanacherry was included for inspectiuon. It was planned that the Diwan be garlanded when he enters Changanacherry boundary at Lappalam. Chandy sir dressed in full suit also arrived at the venue . When the  Diwan got down from his vehicle, Chandy sir escorted him to the stage. Chandy sir snatched the Mangalapatram from the person who was supposed to read it and he read it and submitted to Diwan. He then proceeded to Changanacherry chanda and reached   Mussavari, a public place and when Diwan arrived there, he submitted a petition to Diwan on the needs  of Chanaganacherry town which Diwan accepted. Thus Diwan’s visit was a happy  event for all.

Another  Mangalapatram event in  which he involved resulted in  a civil case filed against him. When Mgr. Cyriac Kandankerry was the administrator of Changanacherry Missam, Selesky, the Deligata Apostolic  appointed from Rome made a visit to Changanacherry Missam , it was decided that a Mangalapatram be submitted to him.  It was  Mgr. Cyriac Kadankerry and Chandy sir who jointly  prepared this in English . Chandy sir read out this and submitted to  Selesky. During this time there were  disputes among Vadakkumbhagam section and Thekkumbhavam section over the appointment of Bishop Makkil as the Bishop.  Vadakkumbhagam wanted a person from their group to be the Bishop. In the  Mangalapatram, there was praise for Bishop Charles Laveeng and Bishop Makkil  which   Vadakkumbhagam did not appreciate. This resulted in a rift  between the two sections and both filed cases one against the other.  Nidheerikkal Mani Kathanar intervened and the cases were withdrawn.

Chandy sir  thus  was a glowing personality  in Changanacherry , but his  leadership  soon came to an end. After he returned home from a meeting for starting a rubber plantation with his friends , he developed fever and vomited blood. He was shifted to his brother  Ousephachen’s house in the morning, but by evening he died.
