When he was in the 4th form in St. Berchman’s High School, his father sent him and his elder brother to St. Joseph’s School, Trichy and after passing Matriculation he joined St. Aloysius College, Mangalore for college studies. He passed intermediate in 1913 and then joined St. Joseph's College, Trichy for Honours. He passed Honours and was the first Honors holder in Changanacherry. When the good news reached home, his father was in his death bed.
While he was studying, he married Aleykutty, daughter of Geevarghese Devasia, Paikkad in 1912. His marriage was honoured by the presence of Late Mannathu Padhanabhan. Many years later, Varghese’s son O.V. Joseph had the privilege of Mannathu Padhanabhan attending his marriage.
His career was devoted for imparting education to the young. From 1916-1921 he taught in S B High School and later served for 7 years as Head Master in St. Thomas College, Pala. From there, he moved to St. Josephs’ Girls High School, Changanacherry as Head Master.
In 1929 he was appointed as Lecturer in History in SB College, Changanacherry and after serving there for 25 years he retired from this job. After a brief period, he again continued his teaching profession in Mar Theophilus Training College, Trivandrum and KE College, Mannanam..
After his retirement he was involved in the functioning of Central Bank, Changanacherry which did not flourish and so he took over another bank by name Eastern Mercantile bank which also did not do well. When it was known that the bank was to be liquidated the depositors demanded their deposits in the bank should be re paid by him. He re-paid the deposits though he was legally bound not to do so.
Varghese’s areas of activities were not confined to education field alone, he had made major contribution in public life too. He was the Municipal President for 9 years. During his period the Municipal office was built. He initiated the concrete metalling of the roads. He was instrumental in the construction of TB House, the front road, Poovakkattuchira park and many more.
Varghese was also very active in the administration of Metropolitan Cathedral Church. He was trustee for 6 years. Bishop Kalasserry appointed him as the long term trustee for clearing the debts of the church. He was the key person behind rebuilding the Chanda Kurisupally when it collapsed although there was opposition from many quarters.He travelled many times to Trivandrum to get the government clearanace for this. He also served as Unit President of Vincent De Paul Society.
He was instrumental in starting Olassail Kudumbha Sanghadena and was its first President.
He lost his eye sight of one eye due to lack of proper care upon eye surgery. As Edanadu Tharavad was given to Telecommunication Dept, he had to shift to Ernakulam to stay with his son, but he desired to come to Edanadu Tharavad and spent his last days. He died of heart failure on 19th September 1975 and was buried in Metropolitan Chruch Cemetry. After few year on 22 February,1981, his wife also died and was buried in Ernakulam.
