In those days  Kerala was under the clutches  of  Portuguese who had commanding power.. European historians who visited Kerala in those days had mentioned about Suriyani Christian in their notings. They clearly mentioned in their travelogue about Suriyani Christians, martial arts experts were differentiated from other religion/caste, easily identified  in public due to their apparel and figuration. Due to this Hindu Kings considered Suriyani Christians as high caste. Christians supplied soldiers to Kings. O P Joseph was a copy of modernized Nasarani. He was popularly known as Olasail Ousepachan. He was the eldest son of Kochandy Pothen whose elder brother Kochandy Vareeth was a Muthalupidiakaran. He had a good physique from childhood but could not progress much in English education.   He acquired some vocabulary in English. Reason behind for his lack of education was his discountenance habit. In his teen ages he used to spent his time with his coeval by presenting dangerous actions and mischief. He was interested in music, drama etc. He had leadership quality. He never bothered for his future life and led a self-indulgent life.

He got married twice. He had one boy and five girls in his first marriage. He had no children in his second marriage .The male child expired at the age of six months. Income from his family property was the main source of his subsistence. Family life was not so happy because of the financial hardness  throughout  his life. He lived as a society man among his contemporaries and relatives creating waves of happy, self-esteem and passed away in woe. Ousepachan was very handsome and had many leadership qualities .He was more than six feet  tall and he was always well dressed in public appearance.

Ousephachan's charming personality was easily identifiable even when he was in a crowd. With his welframed body structure, fair complexion , sweet looks coupled with an authoritative power, he became  a centre of attraction for many who gathered around him. When music also flowed freely from his throat like a waterfall , people became crazy and had no words to express their admiration. His songs were mostly devotional songs

He was the leader of parish choir till his old age. His younger brother who became  a priest  was a replica of him both in looks and in singing. He too had  many artistic qualities and skills. When both of them together rendered devotional songs, it was a feast for the devotees. Under the leadership of Ousephichan, a band troup was organised in Changanacherry church .The band troup conducted performances even outside Changanacherry. Even in public life , Ousephichen took a pivotal role in organising and executing events. During his time there were no political groups and the public functions were mostly church festivals, visits of local and foreign religious leadrs etc.  Ousepachan was always a leader of the masses and community and he commanded a great respect among the people. He used to appear in public functions dressed  up in white dhoti, black long coat , a knot around his head  formed by rolling a black striped  linen and  wearing gold framed spectacles.  His    in born habit was that he could behave as per the circumstances.  For example at the time of Bishop Kuriyalasserr,y a delegation from Rome visited  Changanacherry. A large crowd was present at Boat Jetty to receive the delegates. They were boarded in a decorated horse cart along with Bishop Kuriyalasserry and started journey to Bishop’s house. Suddenly the horse hesitated to move further. People were astonished to see this. Suddenly Ousepachan rose to the occasion, he jumped to the horse cart and took the control of cart and led to Bishop’s house.

In his time a communal riot broke out in Changanacherry. The Govt posted Army to keep law and order. Ousephachen also appeared in the scene. The situation thus  became peaceful. Where the police failed to maintain law and order Ousepachan could easily control the situation by his commanding power.  He was a short tempered man thereby  he faced lot of problems due to this habit. But  this weakness was overshadowed by his other deeds which made him famous.

He died in his old age. On his death bed he consoled all his daughters who wept beside him when he was seriously ill. He was buried in Changanacherry church. His residence was later occupied by his daughters as he had no male child. Later this house was occupied by the late P P Jose who was one of the eminent Municipal Chairman of Changanacherry. The old house was renovated to a two story building by Dr T V jose and he was residing there till his death. Late P P Jose was the son of Ousepachan’s  youngest daughter Chinnamma. The late Dr T V Jose was the son of the late O P Chandy’s daughter . The late  O P Chandy was the brother of Ousepachan and he too had only daughters.
