He was the second son of Kuruvilla Chandy born  in the house presently occupied by Changanacherry Govt Hospital  .In the same plot Kuruvilla Chandy built one more  house .For imparting good education for Pothen, he appointed a teacher from Alapuzha. He learned Tamil, Malayalam ,Mathematics and Christian prayers from him .Further he was sent to a private school in Alapuzha to learn English but he could not complete the English education. Later he was managing family property and business. His first marriage was from Elamana family of Palai. On the death of his first wife he married Kunjannamma of Thengumottil family of Alapuzha.They had nine children; three sons and six girls . Eldest son O P Joseph followed the footsteps of his father.     Second son  O P Chandy became a teacher and later he  became an advocate. Third son O P Thomas became a priest .Kochandy Pothen was a good artist. He had a good hand writing.He was entrusted to rewrite“Thaliola”records of the Lakshmipuram Palace on the merit of his handwriting. In those days members of Olassayil l family used to borrow money from Lakshimpuram Palace. The house he built for his son chandy in Cherukarakunnu known to be ‘Kunnel” was a symbol of traditional art .He expired in the year 1912 and was buried at Changanacherry Metropolitan church.
