  1. Son of Late Prof. O.C. Varghese and Late Elykutty Varghese.

2.     Joseph had his education first at St. Berchman’s High School and later at the St. Berchman’s College,. After graduating from the college he proceeded to Madras to become a Registered Accountant. It was while he was doing his article ship with the prestigious firm of M/s Fraser and Ross of Madras, that the Japanese attached Pearl Harbour. The British wanted Indians to join the armed forces in large numbers. Joseph applied for the post and was selected as the Sub-Lieutenant in the Indian Naval Volunteer Reserve Force.

3.     Joseph worked as a Naval Officer for about three years. He was later promoted as a full Lieutenant. Soon he came under the spell of Mahatma Gandhi who was opposed to his countrymen helping the British war effort. As soon as the war in Europe ended and the Navy permitted its officers to apply for de-mobilization. Joseph availed this opportunity and got himself de-mobilized from the Navy. Thereafter he joined the Reserve Bank of India as Technical Assistant in its Head office in Bombay.

4.     In 1947 he got married to Thankamma. Within a few months of their marriage Joseph contracted glandular tubercular infection. His health deteriorated and finally died on 1st March 1948.
